Beautiful but not native
Updated: Nov 11, 2021
So, in case you were wondering, this site is about native bees. This here is a picture of a European bee (thank you, Marnie Griffiths, for the spectacular photos). Beautiful, yes, but native, no. These ones will sting you. Native bees may bite (if, for example, they are trying to defend their hive from being split) but they don't sting. European bees produce bucket-loads (literally) of honey per year. Native bees do not. A healthy native bee hive may produce about one kg of sugarbag per year but that's about all. No, it's not much, is it!? That's why it's such a rare and special treat.
